Have you ever had someone speak a word of encouragement into your life when you were down? It is a powerful thing.

Research conducted proved medical doctors with good bedside manners are sued less than the doctors who lack relationship skills. They may not be better doctors clinically, but when people have a medical doctor who speaks encouragement into their life, gives them information and seems to care about them, they seldom find themselves in a court battle. Wouldn’t you rather be around people who build you up than those who are silent or tear you down?

The Bible says, “Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression but a good word makes it glad” (Proverbs 12:25 NKJV). Our words are powerful, and how we use them have lasting impact.

One thing we can do during this stress-filled time in our world is to speak encouragement into each other’s lives. When I’ve counseled people facing an immediate crisis, I remind them that the sun will come up tomorrow. The Lord’s mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22).

Another verse that affirms this is Proverbs 17:22: A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones (NKJV). One of the greatest gifts we can give to each other to establish peace and help a person is to speak words of encouragement.

Different words mean different things to different people. Sometimes we want to hear from someone with authority. That’s why we want to hear from the President or somebody who is of authority to speak something that gives us some sense of confidence and position in life. You can do it in your workplace, your church and your family.

God has given you His peace that passes all understanding (Philippians 4:7). As you spend time in God’s Word, pray for others going through difficulties in life. Look for every opportunity to speak encouraging words to others. Inspire them with positive affirmations that fill their heart with gladness.
