There’s just something about being in agreement that brings everything together, whether you’re agreeing with a person or with God.

Years ago I wrote a teaching on God’s will and shared about the time Discipleship Journal author and editor Kevin Miller was invited to join the board of a major Christian organization. He really believed in the work of that ministry, and wanted to help.

But Kevin knew something else: he was a husband and a father. With that came clear responsibilities laid out in God’s Word. So Kevin also knew God was not going to call him to something that would undermine his ability to care for his wife and children:

“What helped me finally make this grueling decision was to pray, ‘God, what specific things have you called me to do?’ One answer was, ‘Love your wife and children. Support them and help develop their gifts.’ If I joined the board, I realized I couldn’t fulfill that very well. As much as it hurt to say no, I had to turn the opportunity down.”

God’s calling—His will—had already been established in Scripture, and helped Kevin make an intentional decision that was in agreement with God and His Word.

You’ll make correct choices as you live your intentional life in Christ by understanding and utilizing what I call the “power of agreement.”

• Agreement with God, understanding what God says in the Bible. 
• Agreement with ourselves, experiencing the peace of God. 
• Agreement with others, taking the time to discuss important decisions with your spouse, children and close friends.
