How to Unite Your Family

family_bike_fun_252.jpg In Romans 12:15, you are encouraged to “rejoice with those who rejoice” and to “mourn with those who mourn.” This is especially true in families.

Intentional families support one another by praising each other for accomplishments, big or small. They celebrate successes – and do it often.

One family I know takes their daughters out to a special dinner every time they have mostly A’s on their report cards. Another takes their child for ice cream after every band performance. Both are expected and anticipated traditions that help the girls feel special about their achievements. These activities reinforce the fact that their children are loved and appreciated.

Successful families also support one another emotionally. Many things happen that are upsetting or even devastating from bad grades to the loss of a job to the death of a loved one. In these times:

  • Make your home a haven, where every family member knows they will be loved and sustained, no matter what.
  • Fortify this feeling of safety by having a vision – a sense of purpose, direction and destiny – in your family.
  • Prioritize praying with each other and praising God together, particularly during the tough times.

Be happy, be sad, and be everything in between, and do it as a family unit. It will strengthen your relationships and place Christ at the center of your home.
