As a Christian figuring out how to be intentional with your finances, you need to put money in its proper perspective. And that starts by giving it away.

In his book “Wisdom of the 90s,” showman George Burns shared, “I’ve learned never to give away what you can charge for.” Humorous for sure, but it’s not a principle to live by.

Scripture is clear that “the worker deserves his wages” (Luke 10:7 NIV) – but is also abundantly clear that you are given what you have so that you can give it away to help others. You’ll be fulfilled spiritually and emotionally than when you’re able to benefit someone else’s life by following these biblical principles:

• “Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.” (Matthew 5:42 NIV)
• “Give, and it will be given to you…for with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” (Luke 6:38 NIV)
• “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give…for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7 NIV)

One Thing

One Thing that you can begin doing today to help others is to give the first part of your income to advance God’s work. Start with your church, and then by giving to an organization that is meeting people’s needs in Jesus’ name.

Plus, if you can’t give 10 percent of your earnings right now, that’s okay. Get underway with some percentage and watch your faith begin to grow.
