You’ve heard it said there are no dumb questions. But if you don’t mentally ask yourself the right questions, you’re certain to get the wrong answers. 

Young people today are increasingly asking the question, “Does marriage work?” Data recently released by the Census Bureau show that for the first time ever, the proportion of people between the ages of 25 and 34 who have never been married exceeds those who are currently married.

Clearly, morals in our society are declining and our youth see the devastating impact of failed marriages. The statistics indicate many young people have given up on marriage.

But for a follower of Christ, “Does marriage work?” is the wrong question. You already know that it does, because it is an institution ordained by God Himself. (Genesis 2:24)

The right questions for a Christian include

• Does God want me to be married? (1 Corinthians 7: 17-40)
• Am I willing to live a life of purity and integrity in preparation for marriage? (Philippians 4:8)
• Do I trust God for a partner who shares my faith and commitment to marriage? (Psalm 37:4)

The unbeliever goes into marriage thinking, “I’ve got a fifty percent shot this will work.” But the Christian says, “All things work together for good for those who love God.”

How you think directly affects how you feel and what you do. You’ll get a better handle on this principle and other keys to living successfully when you start with the right questions.
