What if Bill Maher is Right?

Author: Rod Robison for Intentional Living

God_dollar_252x252.jpgComedian, atheist, and talk show host Bill Maher has never been shy about his distain for Christianity.   I saw him interviewed on TV not long ago. Once again, he dished out a heaping helping of bigoted bitterness on the heads of Christians.  With his characteristic smugness he declared, “Most Christians don’t act very Christ-like.”  My immediate reaction was, Well, there he goes again with his anti-Christian rhetoric.  My second thought, however, was a bit more reflective: You know, he might just have a point.

Although the stereotype of the hypocritical whacko Christian often portrayed by the media has grown tiresome and is anything but typical, can we truly say that most Christians act Christ-like most of the time?  Can I even say that about myself?  How about just in our stewardship decisions?  Do we truly answer Christ’s call to “care for widows and orphans” as we should or “do all to the glory of God” with each of our purchases?

First Peter 2:12 admonishes us to, “Live such good lives among the pagans that they may see your good deeds and glorify God.” What if every Christian in this country was intentionally Christ-like in their stewardship decisions?   What if we really saw ourselves as Christ’s hands and feet every single day…all day?   The world would be absolutely transformed, that’s what.  And even the critics of Christianity would have to admit that followers of Jesus truly demonstrate his love. And maybe…just maybe…Bill Maher would even sit up and take notice.

I'd be interested in hearing from you on what sort of things you're doing to be more intentional with your finances.
