Don't Leave Out Your Most Important Date

Don't Leave Out Your Most Important Date

I'm a big advocate for "dating" your children. My daughter and I have been getting together every other month for a time with just the two of us for the last five years. My son, David, and I have been having our "guy's night out" for the past year or so. I know of no more effective time for passing on your values to your children than when just the two of you are together. If you have kids from four to late teens I highly recommend making it a priority before time passes by you.

About two years into this practice I noticed that my wife, Jeannie, didn't seem as excited as I did about the idea, especially as Jennifer and I were getting ready to go out for an evening. Thick-skulled as I can be at times, I didn't catch on at first. Then it occurred to me that in planning for upcoming dates with my kids I had forgotten to schedule my most important date...my wife. Now, whenever I get the calendar out to plan the month's dates I make sure that my wife gets first dibs at the calendar. After all, as important as these times with my kids are for passing on biblical values to them, one of the most important values I can impart is said better in actions than in words: "Husbands love your wives as Christ loved the church...."
